| When
you think of the menopause you automatically think of
the symptoms which it causes. Hot flushes, mood swings,
irritability and insomnia are all frustrating symptoms,
yet unfortunately there are more risks to your health
which you should be worried about. Risks
such as Osteoporosis, Cancer and Heart Disease can all
affect you once you have been through the menopause.
So why are you more at risk of these symptoms and can
anything be done to help?
Why There Are Serious Health
Risks Linked to the Menopause?
The
reason that you are prone to such serious health risks
after you have gone through the menopause is because
of the lower estrogen levels in your body. However,
whilst you do have a higher chance of developing these
conditions, it is also important to note that you may
not necessarily develop them, there is just a higher
risk that you will.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis
is by far the biggest risk to you after you have been
through the menopause. This is because the lack of estrogen
in the body causes your bones to be stripped down faster
than they are built back up. So you lose bone density
and therefore they become a lot weaker.
The
condition is what causes the elderly to lose height
as well as develop a hunch back. So it can be serious
and it can affect the way in which you live your life.
Cancer
There
are a number of reasons why the menopause can affect
your cancer risk, though it is important to note that
the chances of you developing cancer are still fairly
low. As well as age factors, there are factors such
as your family history and your lifestyle to take into
account too. Also how early you actually started to
go through the menopause will also affect your cancer
risk. Women who go through the menopause early will
find that they have a much higher chance of developing
cancer than a woman who went through the menopause at
the average age.
Heart Disease
Generally
the medication HRT is mainly what highers your chance
of developing Heart Disease after the menopause. However,
various experts claim that you cannot prove this. Again
as with your risk of developing cancer, it will all
completely depend upon your family history and lifestyle
choices.
Overall
the three health risks mentioned above are sometimes
associated with the menopause. However although your
risk of developing them is a little higher after the
menopause, it is still quite unlikely that you will.
As long as you live as healthy a lifestyle as you can,
you stand the best chance of fighting off any serious
condition. If you are worried about any of the health
risks associated with the menopause then do not be afraid
to contact your doctor. |
