Effect of Menopause on Sex Life

When it comes time to go through the menopause, many women do not actually consider the effects which it may have upon their sex lives. Symptoms such as mood swings and hot flushes are well known, but the effects on the sex life are not usually mentioned. So just what can the effects be and is there anything that you can do to treat the problems?

The Effects the Menopause Can Have on Your Sex Life

When you think about the effects that the menopause has upon the body, it is not hard to see just how the sex lives of many menopausal women can suffer! It can make the vagina dry and sore, it causes the skin to become less elastic and it also can cause the breasts to lose some of their bulk. This alone can cause women to suffer a lack of self confidence and the pain that comes from the added dryness often leaves sex too painful and uncomfortable to go through.

One problem which many women find is that if they suffer from night sweats that can affect their sex lives. This is because the lack of sleep causes them to become irritable and also the heat which they produce makes them want to be untouched by anything - including their partners! So, lack of sleep and too much heat combined often equals a fairly poor sex life.

A general loss of interest in sex is also common in many women and they simply stop wanting it. That can obviously affect relationships if it was previously very sexual. In fact, many women’s marriages suffer during the menopause and it isn’t just from a lack of sex either. So, the lack of sex really does add extra tension to the whole menopausal situation. However, it doesn’t have to be like this.

There are things which can help various symptoms of the menopause, including the symptoms relating to our sex lives. A dry vagina can be treated with various creams which are available over the counter or through the doctor. Night sweats can also be treated and your loss of libido might also be treatable. So, whilst the menopause is common, sex life problems do not have to be!

Does Every Woman Experience Sexual problems After the Menopause?

Whilst there is a lot of bad press regarding the menopause, not all women do suffer the symptoms of it. In fact, it is fair to say that many women simply fly through the menopause with no problems whatsoever. So, just because you are reaching the menopausal age it does not mean that you have to worry.

Some women even experience a better sex life after the menopause. One of the reasons for this is the fact that they do not have to worry about contraception anymore. It is like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders and they can relax more, hence the whole experience becomes more enjoyable.

Overall the menopause can affect the body in many ways but even if you do experience problems sexually, there is always a treatment which can help. So, if you are concerned about anything always talk to your doctor and they should be able to put your mind at ease.
