It
has also been uncovered that the right brain processes
not only the meaning of facial expressions but
also the meaning of emotional events. Thus, a
child who has NVLD is not able to read the meaning
into emotional events and is less competent than
children without NVLD in the ability to comprehend
and value humor which includes an appreciation
of cartoons, movies and stories.
Children with NVLD are also less capable
of discerning that a facial expression, gesture,
or prosody of the voice has a deeper meaning.
If they see a scene where a bear is about to attack
someone they may not know that fear is what they
see and hear from the person being attacked. They
may only key into the details –a bear -
a person etc.
So, what is the impact of NVLD? The impact
is significant and it affects the child with it
and those around them everyday. Because the child
is not able to process social information, they
will not be able to understand about how to take
turns when having a conversation. They will also
look peculiar because they do not intuitively
have a sense of personal space and will either
stand to close or to far away when talking to
someone.
Many times a child with NVLD is quire talkative
but what they say seems unimportant and trivial
to listeners. These children laugh at inappropriate
times and exhibit emotions that are not congruent
with the situation. They appear incapable of seeing
a situation from another person’s perspective
and as a result they often offend others.
Along with the impaired social functioning
there are typically academic deficits. Students
with NVLD many times are not able to discern the
main idea from a story, film or reading assignment
and often get trapped in the details. This seriously
interferes with their ability to learn new information
and affects their learning progress all the way
through school.
In summary, the main characteristics of
NVLD include: social problems, emotional problems,
specific deficits in cognitive functioning, and
issues with attention. Intervention, for children
with NVLD, requires very specific strategies that
are targeted toward social skill development and
the meaning of social interactions in the context
of relationships.
